Finals. Game 7. Wild – Sharks

After a series with plenty of home cooking (home team wins games 1-6) – the two Cindarella’s meet for a pivotal game 7 played HTH over Skype!    The visiting Wild pulled out all the stops, bringing in designated hitter Dominick, who is  witnessing his first GHC finals just 4 months into his life!
Game 7 starts with the Wild continuing to dominate in the face-off circle.  Darling denies Eaves early on a GR, and then Kadri goes to the box to put the Wild on the PP.   Darling denies the Wild on 2 #’s chances a GR save to start out just red hot.   A big save on one ends turns into a goal on the other end when Tarasenko beats Howard for a 1-0 lead.   Play evens out the rest of the period, and there was some 4 on 4 non-action, and the period ends with the Sharks up 1-0.
Period 2 starts out with the Kucherov being denied on a breakaway GR, and then Jack Johnson takes a penalty to put the Wild back on the PP.    Not much action this time,    Both goalies come up with a couple of big saves, and then Landeskog & Brassard both go to the box for some more 4-4.  This time there is a RARE 4-4 goal when Kucherov beats Howard with a number chance from a nice feed from Schwartz and the Sharks are up 2-0.   The Wild dominate the rest of the period, but aren’t generating a lot of good scoring chances.
The Sharks are 20 minutes away from winning the Cup, when Patick Eaves shuts up the home faithful by beating Darling just 1 minute into the 3rd, and we’ve got a 1 goal game.   The Wild are just DOMINATING the puck, and Darling comes up huge with GR saves on both Monahan and Eaves.    The Wild push a little to hard, and Connor Brown goes to the box to put the Sharks on the PP.   After an intercepted icing, Barkov brings the home fans back to their feet with a GR goal to reestablish a 2 goal lead.   The Wild continue to dominate, and Darling denies Stone on a GR when Suter takes a bad penatly and the Sharks go back on the PP.   They can’t score, but it kills 2 minutes off the clock that the Wild need.    The clock is winding down, when Tarasenko takes a penatly, but the clock runs out with the Sharks winning game 7 by a 3-1 final and the home fans goes nuts as the Sharks celebrate their first Cup win in a long time!
Congrats to Dave for a great season!!   Hope everyone has a great summer, and is doing their research for what should be a fun draft!!!
<hr>
A couple of notes before the series begins:
1) Minnesota’s one and only Swain Cup Victory came exactly 10 years ago…the only remaining players on the team from that squad are the ageless Henrik Zetterberg and then rookie Paul Stastny.
2) San Jose sniper Nikita Kucherov was actually drafted by the Wild and flipped to the Sharks at the same draft…boy the Wild wish they had him now!
Game 3
San Jose takes the lead halfway through the first on a goal by Couture only to be answered 32 seconds later by Sean Monahan. Wild add 2 in the second but Kessel responds to make it 3-2 MIN headed to third… Monahan strikes again at even strength and Eaves adds an insurance marker to make it 5-2, but the Sharks will not go down quietly. Another goal by Couture makes it 5-3, but a Wennberg marker with 5 seconds left make the 5-4 final seem closer then it was. Mark Stone tallies three assists in the victory
Game 4
Game starts out much like the Game 3 except the first scoring doesn’t happen until the second period. 2 goals for the Wild in the 2nd and 2 goals for Kucherov! Headed to the third tied, Eaves nets the winner on the power play and Sekera nets the insurance. This time no rally from SJ. 4-2 final, shots MIN 37 SJ 24. Johnny Boychuk the first star.
An unlikely ride continues for a team not even picked to make the playoffs riding a the hot goaltending on Jimmy Howard. Will await results of Games 1&2.

This year’s Swain Memorial Cup Finals is an unlikely pairing, pitting the upstart 8th place Minnesota Wild vs. the 6th place San Jose Sharks. Wonder when the last time the finals were two lower seeds like that? I’ll have to do some digging to find out….

FYI – The real reason I’m copying everybody is that hockey ratings preview came out today, so head on over the the Strat website and have a look!

And good luck to Jeff and David in the Finals!

Game 6. Dallas at Minnesota

Game 6 back in Minny.

Tie game until the last minute of the 2nd with the Wild 4th line finally making an impact as Derrick Brassard gives the Wild a 2-1 lead. Dallas pours it on in the third but Howard stands tall again and Zetterberg with the insurance marker.

Congratulations to Don on a great season as the Wild make an improbable run to the cup Final.

New CM to come in the next few days

Game 5. Minnesota at Dallas

American Airlines Arena- After winning game 4 in Minnesota to avoid the sweep, Coach Dale Hunter said ” One game at a time Boys, You never know what can happen” Down 3 games to 1 & facing elimination in Texas, Stars Captain Erik Karlsson jumped on a Rebound just 20 seconds into the game & ripped it by Jimmy Howard for the early 1-0 lead! Dallas had chances to add to the lead with 2 Power-Plays but Howie settled down & kept score at 1-0! Three minutes into period 2 & silence fell over the arena as Veteran Paul Stastny tied the game at one! The fans erupted nearing the 8 minute mark. when a shot from the point by Brooks Orpik went off Howard’s pads right to Josh Bailey & he slammed it home for a 2-1 lead! Into the 3rd period & the Wild get a Power-Play, but the Stars get the kill! Both Goalies take turns making saves, as it’s no place for a nervous person! Just 3 & a half minutes to go & the Wild get another PP as Karlsson takes a delay of game penalty for flipping the puck into the stands! A big save by Bobrovsky on a Mark Stone rebound(rating) & the PK team fights it off! The Wild outshot Dallas 18-9 in the Final Period but 1st Star Sergei Bobrovsky held the fort & Stars Win 2-1 to send series back to Minnesota! Coach Hunter “I’m just elated that we didnt lose this series here on home ice, You know sometimes that 4th win in a series is hard to get” Let’s Go Boys!!

Games 3 , 4 . Dallas at Minnesota

Games 3 & 4

Wild faithful pack into Excel Energy Center for Game 3 on an extra high as word comes out that two franchise legends, Martin Brodeur and Martin St. Louis are both to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Game 3 is a tight back and forth affair with the Stars taking a narrow 1-0 lead into the third. Wild pop in two in the third, but Ryan Kesler ties it with a few minutes left. Game goes to OT as Howard makes a great save in the last minutes of regulation to keep the score tied at 2. Mark Stone is the hero with the overtime marker and the Wild continue their incredible ride to a 3-0 series lead, one win away from the finals.

Game 4 starts out with more of the same as Patrick Eaves continues to prove to be a great trade deadline find giving the Wild an early lead. The rest is all Dallas with a couple of goals by Atkinson, one by Miller and Backstrom for a 4-1 final. Back to Dallas for game 5…

Games 3 and 4. Avalanche at the Shark tank

Game 3:
After winning a pair of hard fought games where they barely managed to hold on despite opening up early leads, the Sharks attempt to keep the Av’s on the ropes. The Av’s kill off 3 straight PK’s in the first, and the period ends 0-0. Kucherov & Rackell get feisty at the start of 2, and Kuch gets the extra 2 but it’s the Sharks turn for the PK to stand tall. SJ sniper blows a shot by Rinne that he didn’t have a chance on, and the Sharks lead 1-0 at the end of the 2nd period. The Av’s come out flying but Scott Darling stands tall and the Sharks prevail at home to go up 3-0. Both goalies played great (5/5 for Rinne and 4/4 for Darling).

The Av’s will go all out in game 4. Can they keep the Sharks from making a cinderalla run back to the finals after several disappointing seasons?

Game 4:

SJ has the Av’s on the ropes – how will both teams respond? The Sharks offense comes alive, and Tarasenko scores early at the 4:19 mark. The hits keep coming with Kessel scoring 2 minutes later, and Tarasenko scoring again late in the period to up a 3 goal lead. Just like games 1 & 2, the Av’s regroup and respond with a nice goal from Richard Rackell to pull it within 2. Unfortunately for the visitors, Phil the Thrill Kessel re-establishes the 3 goal lead seven minutes later, and Scott Darling is playing LIGHTS OUT. With Kyle Palmeiri in the box, Barkov gets an insurance goal on the PP, and that’s all she wrote. Oscar Klefbom adds another PP goal late for a 6-1 final.

The Av’s definitely deserved a better fate. Darling goes 15/15 on GR’s at home over the 2 game stretch in what were pretty much dead even games. Pekka Rinne goes 10/14 over the 2 game stretch, which in most cases would at get a split and bring the series back to the Mile High city.

Congrats to Kevin for a great season with a really strong squad!

Game 2. Sharks at Avalanche

Once again the Sharks come out quickly and take a bite out of the Avalanche. Kucherov 3 minutes in makes it 1-0. Matthews ties it but Lnadeskog and Seguin make it 3-1 by the end of period 1. Barkov scores in the first minute of the second and the rout is on. Lee makes it 4-2 with a PP goal to give the Avs a glimmer of hope as the second period ends. Schwartz scores 29 seconds into the third to regain the 3 goal lead. Hjalmarsson scores on a long bomb to cut it to 5-3 but again, the comeback falls short. San Jose takes a 2-0 series lead back to the Shark Tank.

Games 1, San Jose at Colorado

Game one in Colorado had the fans scratching their heads after the rosters were announced. ” How did our Avalanche have home ice advantage over this stacked team?” Coach Roy reminded his players it takes a team effort, not a bunch of individuals to win a championship.
Well it sounded good in the room, but two minutes in Barkov had the visitors up 1-0. Individuals Kessel and Kucherov made it 3-0 after one period. Palmieri snuck a weak one by to make it 3-1 but Henrique replied quickly to re-establish the 3 goal lead for the Sharks. The Avs battled hard. Late in the third Getlaf made it 4-2. Later with a man in the box, Palmieri fires another to make it 4-3. But time runs out on the miracle comeback. 4-3 home loss in game one has the Avs down 1-0 in the series.
