Game 4 Finals. Sharks at Canucks

San Jose 4 Vancouver 2
Being down 3-0 in the series, Vancouver decides to throw caution to the wind and open it up. And it works for half the game, as they take a 2-0 lead to the halfway point on goals by Dadonov and Gaudreau. But just like game 3, their lead evaporates. In the last half of the second period the Sharks score 3 unanswered goals (Seguin, Kucherov, and Couture). In the 3rd period they add an insurance goal on the power play when Barkov scores his league leading 9th goal. (Does he have a great card or what?)

The wide open play narrows the SOG difference, as the Sharks “only” outshoot the Canucks 40-29 this game. But the quickened pace gave the Sharks a 6-0 advantage on power plays. The game was close only because the Sharks only could convert one of those power plays into a goal.

Head coach Stan Smyl in the post game press conference: We are a little disappointed (Poor Rask, he loses in the final of both the NHL and GHCL while playing well in both). But we got further than 14 other teams. We feel like a Himalayan mountain climber who gets within 200 feet of the summit and just can’t get there. We got blocked by an avalanche (or was it a Snow Shark?) called San Jose. But on the other hand, we never expected to even make it out of base camp (make the playoffs). Yes, we were swept, but we were only outscored by 6 goals in the series. And our future looks bright, the players are looking forward to camp and are committed to getting better. We really need our forwards to improve defensively, that became apparent in this series. We are probably the youngest team in the league, and if the players continue to develop we could enjoy winning a few games.

GM Otteson in the post game press conference: In retrospect, maybe we shouldn’t have traded Luongo, but we got a potentially solid defenseman in 20 year old Victor Mete and solid penalty killer, faceoff man in 28 year old Sissons. But Rask played great, so the only disadvantage was in facing Luongo, and since we thought the playoffs out of reach, who knew? The jury is still out on trading Edler to Colorado, we felt he just took too many penalties, without enough hits. Getting Marcus Johansson in return will only pay off if he can stay healthy. We are excited about the spike in season ticket sales already happening.

Congratulations to Jeff. The Sharks pretty much waltzed through the playoffs, going 12-2. Pretty impressive. Enjoy the Cup, I and 14 other guys will try to take it from you next year.

Finals. Game 3. Sharks at Canucks

Vancouver Canucks

San Jose 5 Vancouver 4

Game 3 finds the Canucks in a 2-0 hole, but optimistic about being back on home ice. However Landeskog scores on the first shot of the game at 1:38 and now its a game 3 hole the Canucks are in. But wait, at 6:20 Krejci scores, then at 8:24 Sedin scores, then at 10:07 Gostisbehere scores, and to top it off, at 13:04 Josi scores a PPG following a penalty to Tarasenko. The crowd is going wild as Luongo is pulled after giving up 4 goals on only 7 SOG and for only the second time in the playoffs Vancouver has a three goal lead.

But at 15:21 Braun scores his first goal of the playoffs. No worries, its still a two goal lead. But at 17:02 Rantanen scores and the wild first period ends with the Canucks leading only 4-3. Coach Smyl calms his team down during the intermission and the play is not so hectic in the second period, but the only goal scored in the period comes at 17:00 from Kucherov and its tied after 40 minutes. In the 3rd period, again no goals until 14:06 when Barkov scores and Vancouver can’t counter. And the Sharks win 5-4.

Its a very disappointing loss, blowing a three goal lead to create a 3-0 series, but hope springs eternal and coach Smyl vows to have a new approach for game 4. Says Smyl: Obviously, what worked against Dallas and Colorado isn’t working against San Jose, we were outshot 52-25, Rask kept us in the game (15 for 17 on GRs), but even he can’t win with that shot differential. We will open it up and see if we can create more offense, they can’t shoot when the pucks in their end.
