Game 5. Canucks moving on.

While the fans were hoping for a split in Colorado, they were ecstatic when the team swept in Colorado and Game #5 became a potentially clinching game.  However, Colorado wasn’t ready for that to happen and came out flying, outshooting the Canucks 15-5 in the first period and forcing DeMelo into taking two penalties.  But to the Avs chagrin, when the period ended, they trailed the Canucks 1-0, as Daniel Sedin continued to light up Colorado by getting an inside shot past Hutton.
That seemed to take some (but not all) of the steam out of them, and when Josi knuckleballed an outside shot past Hutton at 2:12 of the 2nd period, they were in a 2-0 hole.  Later in the period they couldn’t score on a power play following a penalty to Rask, and it was 2-0 after two periods.
Early in the third period a penalty to Sedin gave Colorado their fourth power play of the game, and they came up empty again.  Finally Vancouver got their first power play following a penalty to Skjei.  And guess what, Vancouver scored on it when Galchenyuk got his third PPG of the playoffs at 4:44, and for the first time in the playoffs Vancouver had a three goal lead.  Sobotka immediately took another penalty, and Vancouver put on pressure but couldn’t score.  Finally, at 9:36, Colorado wrecked Rask’s shutout bid when Matthews scored.  But after that they couldn’t muster too much of an attack, and their season ends on a 3-1 loss.
While Vancouver rode the Rask hot streak to beat Dallas, in this series they rode the special teams play to beat Colorado.  They were 5 of 17 on the power play in the series and a perfect 12 of 12 on the penalty kill.  At even strength, the Avs outscored Vancouver 13-12.
In the post game press conference, Coach Stan Smyl expressed his pleasure with his team.  “On paper they don’t look like much, but they are tenacious, patient, opportunistic.  They are very disciplined, taking far fewer penalties than their opponents, and know how to do special teams.  And they rarely panic, blowing a lead only once in the playoffs (Game 2, Colorado).  We’ve been playing them close to the vest and every game has been tight, and the boys just seem to find a way to win.  And a little luck helps too.
Just how tight, in their 10 playoff games:
5 one goal victories, 3 of them in overtime.
    3 two goal victories
2 one goal losses, 1 of them in overtime.
