Game 5. Canucks moving on.

While the fans were hoping for a split in Colorado, they were ecstatic when the team swept in Colorado and Game #5 became a potentially clinching game.  However, Colorado wasn’t ready for that to happen and came out flying, outshooting the Canucks 15-5 in the first period and forcing DeMelo into taking two penalties.  But to the Avs chagrin, when the period ended, they trailed the Canucks 1-0, as Daniel Sedin continued to light up Colorado by getting an inside shot past Hutton.
That seemed to take some (but not all) of the steam out of them, and when Josi knuckleballed an outside shot past Hutton at 2:12 of the 2nd period, they were in a 2-0 hole.  Later in the period they couldn’t score on a power play following a penalty to Rask, and it was 2-0 after two periods.
Early in the third period a penalty to Sedin gave Colorado their fourth power play of the game, and they came up empty again.  Finally Vancouver got their first power play following a penalty to Skjei.  And guess what, Vancouver scored on it when Galchenyuk got his third PPG of the playoffs at 4:44, and for the first time in the playoffs Vancouver had a three goal lead.  Sobotka immediately took another penalty, and Vancouver put on pressure but couldn’t score.  Finally, at 9:36, Colorado wrecked Rask’s shutout bid when Matthews scored.  But after that they couldn’t muster too much of an attack, and their season ends on a 3-1 loss.
While Vancouver rode the Rask hot streak to beat Dallas, in this series they rode the special teams play to beat Colorado.  They were 5 of 17 on the power play in the series and a perfect 12 of 12 on the penalty kill.  At even strength, the Avs outscored Vancouver 13-12.
In the post game press conference, Coach Stan Smyl expressed his pleasure with his team.  “On paper they don’t look like much, but they are tenacious, patient, opportunistic.  They are very disciplined, taking far fewer penalties than their opponents, and know how to do special teams.  And they rarely panic, blowing a lead only once in the playoffs (Game 2, Colorado).  We’ve been playing them close to the vest and every game has been tight, and the boys just seem to find a way to win.  And a little luck helps too.
Just how tight, in their 10 playoff games:
5 one goal victories, 3 of them in overtime.
    3 two goal victories
2 one goal losses, 1 of them in overtime.

Game 4. Vancouver at Colorado

Well, the Barrie strategy didn’t work. We just increased our goals against, so…..Hainsey is back in for game 4. The Avalanche are trying to even up the series at 2 in front of their home crowd. There is a packed house at the Pepsi Center tonight expecting big things from their home town team.
Two minutes into the game the Canucks settle the crowd down quickly as Zajac takes a saucer pass from Gaudreau and makes it 1-0. At the midway point Johnny Hockey strikes again and it’s 2-0 for the visitors.  A hush falls over the crowd.  Auston Matthews strikes back quickly beaten Hickey and scoring to make it 2-1.  The crowd is once again alive.  Trevor Lewis then gets his stick on an Edler point shot and deflects it in to tie the game.  The crowd is going crazy. Lee takes a penalty but the Avs kill it with two to go in the second. Getzlaf is then called for a penalty.
The second period begins with the Nucks on the PP..  The Avs kill that one too and then Lowry is served two for the Canucks.  The Canucks kill the penalty and 5 on 5 finally resumes. Boone Jenner is denied by Hutton on a breakaway and then Edler gets called and heads off for two at the midway mark.  Trocheck gets a short handed breakaway but Rask is up to the task.  The play returns to the Avalanche end and Denis Malgin converts a Josi feed to provide the Nucks with a 3-2 lead. Rask makes a few more GR stops and the period ends with Vancouver leading 3-2.
A tight third period is being played out.  Edler slips through and gets a breakaway but once again Rask is there to stop his old team.  Nik Ehlers rips a clapper from outside that fools Rask and the game is tied at 3-3.  Ehlers is having himself a series. Canucks go to the power play shortly thereafter. Getzlaf, one of the Avs’ top penalty killers is sent off for the second time tonight.  Gostibehere is stopped by Hutton on a breakaway and Josi is stoned at point blank with 8:45 to go. Teams are at full strength.  Adam Lowry is then stopped in the slot but Spurgeon fails to clear and Vlasic’s turn around wrist shot evades Hutton.  4-3 Canucks.  Another Avalanche penalty and coach Roy is fuming.  He has called the referee over wondering what he has against this team.  “There’s two teams out there zebra, open your #F^@^ eyes.”  Colorado kills the penalty but can’t get any offence going.  Hutton to the bench.  Edler a big chance, stopped by Rask.
The Canucks prevail and take a 3-1 series lead back to Vancouver.

GAME STORY
In a strong showing away from home, Vancouver won by one goal over Colorado
by a final tally of 4 to 3. MARC-EDOUARD VLASIC netted the last goal,
the game winner, at 11:20 of the 3rd period. Others registering goals
were JOHNNY GAUDREAU, TRAVIS ZAJAC and DENIS MALGIN for Vancouver and
AUSTON MATTHEWS, NIKOLAJ EHLERS and TREVOR LEWIS for Colorado.

Game 3. Canucks in Colorado

Colorado makes some line up adjustments to attempt to get the power play going. Tyson Barrie is in for Ron Hainsey who was a negative 5 in a defensive role. Larsson will pick up the shadowing task while the insertion of Barrie hopes to stimulate a stale PP unit.
The centers are also switched up trying to get the offense going for the high flying Avs,

Kyle Palmieri strikes first early in the opening frame to put the home team up. Lots of shots are exchanged, mostly outside chances for the better part of the period. Hot handed Daniel Sedin scores again in the series to tie it up late in the first. A late PP for the Avs give them an opportunity but the Nucks kill it easily and the period ends at 1-1

Johnny Hockey scores just after the first minute of play to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. Mattthews to the box and Krejci takes advantage with a quick inside shot to make it 3-1 Canucks. The Avs’ Rakell picks up a rebound and puts it home to cut the deficit to one goal.at the midway point of the second frame.

Rakell gets his second of the night to tie the game early in the third on a soft pass from Getzlaf. Rakell is stopped on a GR midway through the third after Hutton denied Pickles (Vlasic) of a GR moments before. Kyle Palmieri picks up his own outside shot rebound and bounces it by a sprawled Rask to make it 4-3 Avalanche with 7 minutes to go. Sedin then takes a penalty but Rask denies a barrage of shots to keep it a one goal game. Brock Boeser is denied on a GR with just over two minutes to go but he also pounces on his rebound and tucks it in to tie the game at 4 all. How big was Rask on that PP…OH BABY!

Overtime:
Alex Edler is called for a penalty and the Canucks go to the PP early in OT. Trevor Lewis tries to do too much on the penalty kill and coughs up the puck to Galchenyuk who makes no mistake

Canucks win 5-4

Game 2. Colorado at Vancouver

Colorado 3 Vancouver 2

All good things must end and Vancouver loses its first home game of the playoffs.

Boeser scores just as a power play ends in the first period for a 1-0 lead. And instead of playing most of the game tied as in the first game, this game had the Canucks with a one goal lead for most of the game as it was still 1-0 after two periods.

Then the wild third period. First Sedin scores just 25 seconds into the 3rd period for a 2-0 lead, which feels huge. But just 29 seconds later Rakell scores and its 2-1. Then at 12:56 Ehlers scores his second goal of the series and its tied 2-2. This seemed to wake Vancouver up and they got many chances as Tanev got a breakaway, Josi missed on a 1-7 chance, and Krejci got a breakaway. But the Canucks can’t score. But ex-Canuck Palmieri does on his breakaway chance at 18:12 and the Avs come back from a 2-0 deficit to take their first lead in the series, 3-2. Gaudreau gets one last great chance on an inside shot with 5 seconds left, but can’t beat Hutton and the series is tied 1-1.

Game 1. Colorado at Vancouver

Colorado 2 Vancouver 3 2 OT

The Canucks utilized their conservative approach at home that worked all three games against Dallas and managed to squeeze out a victory at 8:29 of the 2nd overtime period and remain undefeated at home. The game had lots of shots (exactly 100), especially outside shots and breakaways. The outside shots from Vancouver’s conservative approach and the breakaways from

Colorado’s wide open approach.
The first goal wasn’t scored until the middle of the 2nd period, when Rakell gave up a breakaway and Galchenyuk scored. Ehlers tied it 6:13 later, and the period ended 1-1. In the third, Sedin scored at 7:21 and Pavelski answered 1:08 later to tie it 2-2.

It wasn’t until the 32nd SOG in overtime that the game ended when Gelchenyuk (who was the best forward for the Canucks in the first round), scored his second goal on an outside shot (only) on the power play, following a penalty to Anders Lee.

Rask, who had a great first round, stopped 52 of 54 shots and 9 of 11 GRs. With the Avs scoring quickly after the Canucks scored, the game was tied for 81:08 of the 88:29 played.

Game 3: Kings dominate the shots, and deserve a better fate but the Sharks win 5-1.
Game 4: Sharks control, and Luongo gets the shut-out 2-0.

Setting up a pivotal game 5!

Game 5: WIth their season on the line, Kings take an early lead behind an early goal by Jonathan Toews. Sharks respond when Schwartz ties it up, and shortly thereafter Tarasenko puts the home team on top. The Kings come back and Sean Couterier ties it up after 40. The deeper Sharks prove to be too much behind 2 goals by Barkov and Tarasenko’s 2nd of the game for a 5-3 final.

Congrats to Pat for a great season with the Kings!

Jeff
