The Colorado Avalanche began the 2017 draft by taking generational player Auston Matthews. Matthews scored four goals in his first NHL game and then went on to win the rookie of the year. The Arizona native should be a mainstay on a much improved hockey club in Denver. Colorado has collected a lot of quality prospects in this last couple of years and Matthews will be a big addition for this year and many years to come.
With the second selection in the draft, the Tampa Bay Lightning selected Patrick Laine. Laine is a pure goal scorer in the mold of Alex Ovechkin. He should give the Lightning some solid offense from the right side for years to come. At the World Championships last year, Laine was one of the youngest players in the tournament. Despite his age he was the MVP of the tournament .
