WINNIPEGWHITE

bluesjserseyhome

This was a game the Blues had no business winning. The Jets dominated from start to finish and not sure how the home team pulled this out. A late powerplay goal by Mark Scheifele was the game winner as the Jets outshot the Blues in each period. Blues could not pass or penetrate all night long. EAch time they turned it over until they just started taking outside shots out of frustration. The silly strategy seemed to play off as Nick Foligno on an outside shot tied it and Scheifele continued his fine year with the game winner. Only oddity were the goalie ratings which favoured the Blues 7-2.

GAME STORY
In front of a cheering crowd St. Louis won a close one against Winnipeg

MATT HUNWICK for Winnipeg and NICK FOLIGNO and ERIC STAAL for St. Louis.

The Blues were constantly battling back in this one but in the end, it was just not enough against a tough Stars squad. Dallas’s pest Brad Marchand, who stood out all night long, scored first on the power play to give the Stars a lead. But Mark Scheifele tied the game early in the second period on the powerplay. The Stars then got a second powerplay goal when Pavel Datsyk scored only to see Cam Atkinson score just two minutes later to extend the Stars lead to 3-1. But St.Louis scored with just 14 seconds left in the second period to make it 3-2 when Alex Pietrangelo scored. Mark Scheifele , gets his second of the game, just a minute later and the game was tied very early in the third. But the Stars battled back in this wide open affair when Brad Marchand scored again on the powerplay. But St.Louis got a powerplay goal on their own, just a minute later, as the Blues had again tied the game at 4-4. Nothing was decided in overtime and Stars got goals from Marchand and Backstrom in the shootout to win it. Rick Nash was the lone scorer in the shootout for the Blues.

Tampa – Islanders had a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period with a PP goal from the captain Patrice Bergeron. He also added an assist minutes later when Steen went top shelf on Fleury. The crowd went silent in the middle of the 2nd period as former Islander, Morgan Rielly beat Dubnyk with Okposo picking up an assist. Dustin Byfuglien made it 3-1, driving another PP goal home. Carter would make it 3-2 with a shorthanded goal but the Islanders hold on to win in the home opener.

blues
St. Louis – A very wild game. Both teams trading goals by the twos! Foligno gets the first 2 goals for St. Louis and then goals by Fowler and Richards evens things up. A goal late in the 2nd period and early in the 3rd period gave the Blues another 2 goal lead. 2 minutes later the Islanders score two goals to tie it back up 40 seconds apart. Scheifele scores. Trouba scores. 5-5 game. With 5 minutes to play, the Islanders finally caved and couldn’t bounce back. Coyle gets the 6th goal and Kuznetsov scores with 7 seconds left for the icing on the cake.

blackhawks
Chicago – Newcomers Hayes and Toews both get their first goals as Islanders, while rookie McCabe had two assists. Dubnyk takes first star in the contest with a 32 save shutout as New York picks up 2 points with a 3-0 win.

coloradoalternate
Colorado – New York outshot Colorado 47-20. Pekka Rinne went 11/12 on rating saves, and stopped 46 shots. Rinne didn’t get any star points but the Av’s pick up a point in a 2-1 shootout win for the Islanders. Rinne deserved that win for the Av’s but Byfuglien scored midway through the 2nd period and it was Alex Steen with the winner in the shootout.

jets
Winnipeg – I wanted to pull my hair out after this game. Pavelski gets a goal early to start things off, but the Islanders score 3 straight for a 3-1 lead going into the 3rd period. Schenn 3-2. 3 minutes to play… O’Reilly, buckets. The Islanders blew a 2 goal lead and lose in a shootout, 4-3 final, Jets with the win. Pavelski and Spezza both scored in the shootout.

We are pleased with Dubnyk so far, posting a 93.9% in 4 games. Plekanec leads the team with 3 goals and 3 assists through 5 games. Old guy Brad Richards has been a surprise through 3 games, scoring 2 goals, getting an assist and posting a team lead +4. Thanks,

Kevin – NY Islanders
