Blackhawks Review

While looking at my team for this upcoming year, we are extremely excited about the upcoming year, this is the best I have had since joining the GHCL and that got me thinking how did the roster come to be and started doing some research on our wonderful website and looked at all the trades and draft and here is my review

When I took over this team in July 2014 this team was a bottom feeder for many years but was up and coming.

This was the Sawmmi had to say the year I took over

“CHICAGO- HA! Swami was finally right! After years of bottom-feeding & Swami saying this is the year they finally make it,,,they did…a playoff spot & 3rd in the Regular Season! Swami again says Playoffs for the Hawks! GM & Coach Dan Dumont had some holes to fill,as his Top 2 Centers will be lost to injuries for part of this season(Tavares just 59 GP & Stamkos only 37 GP) With Curtis Glencross(38 GP),Logan Couture & Martin Hanzal only getting 65 GP,alot of Center & Left Wing was lost to injuries, but a deal was struck with the New York Islanders that shored up the lost man games. Chicago acquired Center Brad Richards & Center/Left-Wing Brandon Dubinsky, giving up their 2nd round Rookie Pick & Goalie Jonathan Bernier! Eight 20 or more Goal-Scorers highlite the Hawks & Stamkos’s 25 in 37GP will be Scary! Josh Harding with a League best .933 saves% will get just 29 gms, Brian Elliot & Branden Holtby will fill in the rest, excellent Goaltending again for the Hawks! The only weakness Swami sees is at RD,where after P.K. Subban & John Carlson, it’s 2/2 Alexei Emelin & 1/2 Tim Gleason, but that shouldnt be a problem! This team can run 4 good lines at you with no shortage of Offense, should be another Big year in the Windy City!”

This was my 3rd league I ever joined but was happy to have Stamkos and Tavares, I remember that year Stamkos only had 37 games, and he only played at home. I remember this team didn’t have much depth on D and had to use Emelin and Gleason but as you will see I worked hard to remedy that. I remember I took over near when the draft was starting and I had no early picks, so my 1st trade was on  July 26th when we send our 3rd, 4th and 5th in the rookie draft for DAL UFA pick, probably overpaid but wanted help on D

the trade ended up

M.Barberio (3)

T.Wilson (4)

K.Connauton (5)

A.Stralman (UFA)

Well that turned out great for us as Stralman has become our top RD in the last couple of years then the same year we picked A.Dejardins with the last pick of the 2014 UFA draf K.Russel. With Stralman and Russel they really help put our team over the top.

My next deal I remember this one and maybe my worst deal I have made so far

July 29th traded J.Abdelkader to COL for J.Benn who almost didn’t play for us at all, I just didn’t think Justin would bounce back after a bad year, and was really working to help my D, who knew that Stralman and Russell would turn out the way they did

on Aug 1st 2014 we traded R.Lehner to TB for their UFA 2015 pick, don’t remember who I got and I can’t find the 2015 ufa picks.

My next deal was on FEB 16 2015, believed this was near the deadline, Still looking for help on LD and LW and not sure this team was good enough for a push we did the following trade

to Tampa

J.Carter, B.Richards, J.Benn, CHI 3rd 2015 (traded to COL they selected L.Lessio)

to Chicago

C.Macarthur, B.Campbell TB 1st 2015 (K.Hayes)

Our 1st year was very successful as we went to the semi finals, riding Harding back but there was to many holes in the deal to comepete against the big boys.

When the 2015 off season was set to begin things where looking pretty good for the hawks

The SwAMMI had this to say

“CHICAGO- The Blackhawks finished in 3rd place last year & had 100 pts,one of just 3 teams to reach that mark! GM-Coach Stephan Paquette just got his Goalie signed to a long-term contract & Braden Holtby is ready to play & play he will,as Holtby gets 73 games this season! Back-up Brian Elliot will see little action behind the #1 stud! Clarke MacArthur, who came over from Tampa at the 60-game trade deadline last season, has been handed the #1 job at LW, he’ll play with John Tavares & Jacob Voracek on the Top Line! The 2nd line has Wayne Simmonds at LW, Logan Couture at Center & Steven Stamkos on RW! After loading up the first two lines, the Hawks are still trying to put together lines 3 & 4 & with 2 1st Round Rookie Picks,we might see some youngsters make the line-up! Brandon Dubinsky(47 GP),Martin Hanzal(37 GP),Dustin Brown,Boyd Gordon & Curtis Glencross will all see time on those lines! The Blueline is headed by Kris Russell & P. K. Subban on the Top Line! Brian “Soupy” Campbell will skate with John Carlson on the 2nd line! The competition heats up for line 3 LD,as Dimitri Kulikov,Jay Bouwmeester & Alexei Emelin all battle for the job! Anton Stralman will play on the Right side! 20 GOAL SCORERS- 5 ( Stamkos 43,Tavares 38,Simmonds 28,Couture 27,Voracek 22) WISH LIST- Has an extra LD(Emelin/Bouwmeester) to possibly deal, could use help on the Wing(hint-Phoenix/Boston) ROOKIE PICKS- has his own & Tampa’s ..Couple Forwards! SWAMI SAYS: Defense & Goaltending wins alot of games & the Hawks have that, could it be a Top 4 Spot again!”

That year the key was to get a top LW and upgrade our 3rd and 4th line, This is where Russell and Stralman became good lol, and really helped with our D depth

our first big deal

Aug 8th 2015 with Stralman and Russell gave us enough depth to trade Carlson

to PHX

to CHI

this gave us our 1st LW and some good scoring depth for the 3rd/4th line

With the rookie draft coming up the Blackhawks had some picks this year

we picked

on Aug 24th the following trade was done

to STL

to CHI

This was more a LD for RD depth

To finish off the 2015 season we made to the finals, but losing in 6 games

To start the 2016 offseason on July 20th the Hawks made a huge trade with Colorado

to COL

Chi 1st 2016 N.Ehlers

CHI 2nd 2016 C.Bigras

to CHI

On Aug 7th in what was a very busy day the Hawks traded fan favorite PK Subban to San Jose

to SJ

PK Subban

CHI 2nd 2017

CHI 2016 UFA (later re acquired)

to CHI

SJ 1st 7ov (S.Bennett)

SJ 2016 UFA

we were very excited to add Bennett to our team, this year draft is probably the deepest I have ever seen. Getting Giordano really made the PK Subban possible

and Then

to TOR

to CHI

TOR 1st 11th ov

With Holtby in place we felt we could try and use Elliot to get a 1st round pick, but no sooner i had the 11th ov pick, COL came in with an offer, but we were waiting on the PK deal to be done, because we wanted 1st in this year draft

to COL

11th ov (Max Domi)

to CHI

we really wanted to make a good 3rd checking line and needed a LW Nielsen fits perfectly with Dubinsky and Oshie.

to NYI

to CHI

3rd 2016 (A.Marchenko)

We traded last year 1st K.Hayes, we were a little disapointed with Hayes and we still wanted some depth off the bench or 4th line on the LW, Nvquist will fit there and maybe he bounces back with a better year this upcoming year.

to TB

to TB

Well at this point we are all in, and Charra will help this year, Severson and Mueller are both very good prospect, and think i traded all my picks except for Beaulieu and Trotman from the previous year

to CHI

to TB

CHI 1st 2017

Again proving their all in for this year, only have 4th round 2017 left, but took a chance that Radulov has a good year with my Habs. If anything I have many Habs on my roster lol

Maybe the craziest day in my strat career, but Chicago came out with a great prospect in Bennett and got better everywhere well at least for the immediate future

On Aug 11th

With the additional depth we wanted to restock our prospect pool

to CHI

TOR 2nd 2016 J.Mcann

TOR 4th 2016 S.Andrighetto

to TOR

the draft 2016 went this way

1.07 -S.Bennett

2.11 -J.Mccann

4.11 -S.Andrighetto

5.05 -G.Pateryn

5.13 -E.Medvedev

5.15 –

with 3 UFA picks coming, we should be able to round up our bench.

and the SAWAMMI gave his prediciton for this upcoming year

“CHICAGO-  The Blackhawks scored 278 Goals last season, the most in the League & was the runner-up in the GHC CUP Finals! The Hawks return 8 players with 20 or more Goals, led by Steven Stamkos(36G) who will play on the Top Line with Max Pacioretty & John Tavares!  Newcomer(trade)Frans Nielsen was seen with Joe Thornton & T. J. Oshie on the 2nd line!  Jacob Voracek, whose 108 pts led the League last year was slotted with Brandon Dubinsky & Wayne Simmonds on line 3!  Gus Nyqvist(trade) , Martin Hanzal(64GP) & Rookie Sam Bennett worked the 4th line!  Matt Moulson & Joel Ward(said to be trade-bait) skated by themselves after practice! On Defense, Newcomer(trade) Mark Giordano was with Anton Stralman on the Top Line!  Zdeno Chara(trade) & Zach Bogosian(64GP)(trade) were the new line 2 mates!  Brian “Soupy” Campbell was skating with Jeff Petry(51GP) on line 3!  Kris Russell was rumored to be on the trading block!  In Goal, Braden Holtby will be the “Man” while newcomer(trade) Anti Raanta will get some spot starts!  The off-season revamp of the line-up has the Hawks easily returning to the post-season & quite possibly to the Finals again! Swami says:  Gonna be a fun year in the Windy City!”

This was a fun review of my time in GHCL, we improved every year and hopefully this year we can do 1 better again. Can’t wait for this season
