Game 1 St Louis
A real tight battle for two periods with both teams exchanging a pair of goals. The wheels come off the cart for the Avs in the third as the Blues rip 4 consecutive goals in the final frame to cruise to a 6-2 win. Pekka Rinne continues to struggle after a strong first block.
Game 2 Minnesota
Antti Raanta gets his first start of the season and the Wild don’t mind one bit. Two quick goals in the first 9 minutes pace the visitors to a 2-0 lead after one. Minnesota adds another in the second to make it 3-0. Zetterberg makes it 4-0 29 seconds into the third as the Avalanche continue to be denied by Quick. Alex Killorn finally beats Quick but the All-Star goaltender would allow no more, going 11 for 12 on GR, as the Wild pick up 2 points in a solid 4-1 victory.
Game 3 Vancouver
Rask returns between the pipes as the coaching staff finally decides to go with the hot hand. Colorado rookie Ryan Spooner finds some chemistry with winger Anders Lee, with the former scoring two goals on feeds from the freshman to pace the Avs to a 3-2 win over the Canucks.
Game 4 Boston
Rask is back in to face the Bruins attack. Boston scores quickly as Jannik Hansen buries a goal at 3:18 of the first. Spooner finds Lee again to tie the game midway through the frame. Sami Vatanen blasts a G (roll 9 on rebound) on the power play to give the Avs a 2-1 lead after one. It was all Boston the rest of the way, as they outshoot the Avs 10-1 and 12-3 in the second and third period. But Rask was a wall, stopping everything his way to preserve the win for Colorado.
Game 5 NYI
Rinne gets the start versus the visiting Islanders and his troubles continue. Isles jump to a 2-0 lead after one on goals by Steen and Trouba. Nyquist makes it 3-0 in the second. Barrie replies for the home team on the PP but the Avs still trail 3-1 after two. Cole restores the 3 goal lead for NY in the third. Anders Lee scores in the dying seconds to make it a 4-2 final.
Another rough home stand in Colorado without captain Giordano in the lineup. Adam Larsson also missed all 5 home games as did centers Nugent Hopkins and Zemgus Girgensons. Yakupov was a healthy scratch with the flying V rookies Vincent Trochek and Victor Rask getting an opportunity to play their first GHCL games. Ryan Spooner, who lit a fire under Anders Lee, also looked good in his first 5 games of his career.
