Tampa Champs. Playoff Stats

Tampa Bay outlasts Phoenix in a tough seven game series to take the GHC Cup for the 4th time in 5 seasons. Tough call on playoff MVP, I think I would choose Kopitar (Greg and Jay may have other thoughts, goalies Khudobin or Fleury are good choices as well).

Next on the docket will be the playoff lottery, which I’ll ask Don and Kevin Miron to run again as I snuck into the #4 slot at the end.

Have a great summer!

Matt

Game 7 . Phoenix at Tampa.

smallcoyotes

smalllightning

With the series tied at 3-3 the Cup is in the building and WILL be on the ice at the conclusion of this, the final game of GHCL season! Who will be the hero of Game 7……let’s find out!

Bolts carry the play for most of the first period out quality-chancing the visitors but Khudobin stands tall. With just over 4 minutes to play in the opening period Khudobin makes a great save thru a screen of a Brouwer shot, but the wily veteran Elias is there to bang home a juicy rebound for the games’ first goal…..1-0 TB after one.

Someone forgot to tell the Bolts the 2nd period started as they immediately give up a wide open chance for Getzlaf and the Yotes sniper beats Fleury at 0:16 to tie the game. That goal seemed to get the Bolts’ attention as Chara got a breakaway shortly thereafter, stoned by Khudobin, but then before the shift ended Toews fired one thru a screen the eludes Khudobin for a 2-1 TB lead at 2:01. Each goalie then took turns flashing the leather with multiple breakaway stops and inside chances thwarted until late in the period when Joel Ward finds a rebound and pushes it past Fleury to tie the game at 2-2. No more scoring in the middle period with the Yotes holding a slight shot advantage 26-25 but Khudobin has seen a lot more quality chances than Fleury to this point.

So the Cup comes down to a final 20 minutes (or maybe more!)! Yotes come flying out of the locker room with Voynov stoned by Fleury 29 seconds into the period and Fleury stopping Ryan on a great inside chance at 2:44 to keep the game tied. On the ensuing rush the Bolts work a sweet 3 way passing play with Carter the beneficiary of a great pass and he beats Khudobin to give the Bolts a 3-2 lead at 3:15. Bolts keep the pressure on sensing blood in the water and 3 minutes later it’s Elias again to push the lead to two 6 minutes into the 3rd. Furious play continues from both sides with each team giving it all they have and Khudobin continues to shine stopping Carter on a great rebound chance. Under 7 minutes to go and the Yotes are pressing and as a result give up not one but 2 breakaways in succession…….but Khudobin is there to keep the Yotes hopes alive. Down under 4 minutes to play and Bobby Ryan rips a twisted wrister past Fleury to cut the lead to one! Then off the ensuing faceoff the Bolts work the puck around and find Kopitar for an inside chance and bang, he beats Khudobin to extend the lead back to two goals at 5-3 with just under 2 minutes to play! Faceoff won by the Bolts as the Yotes look to get Khudobin to the bench for the extra attacker but O’Reilly is whistled for a penalty!! So the Yotes will now need 2 shorthanded goals to tie the game…..but that’s too much to ask and as the clock winds down chants of “we want the Cup!” ring thru the frenzied crowd and the Bolts are champions again taking game 7 by a 5-3 final!

3 stars of the game…….3 – Fleury (36 saves, 3goals, 3-6 rating saves), 2 – Carter (1g,1a, 6 shots), 1-Elias (2g including gwg, 6 shots)

Congrats to Jay and the Yotes on a great season, playoff run and awesome series!!

coyotes

Khudobin continues his strong and very lucky playoff. Joe Pavelski scores just a couple minutes in and the Coyotes had a 3-0 lead going into the 3rd period. It was not without some split magic luck as there we multiple splits over 1-15 that someone Khudobin stopped. The Bolts put the scare of the end of the season into the Yotes as they scored 2 goals in a minute with 5 minutes left in the game. I dropped in to a 1-1 and that stemmed the tide and continued the home team dominance. Phoenix holds on for a 3-2 win. Series tied at 3.

Same CM for game 7, good luck!

It’s now a best of 3 for the GHCL cup with Game 5 back in Tampa Bay…..

The teams trade goals for the majority of the first 1/2 of the game as Khudobin was on his game as the Bolts were generating a ton of quality scoring chances….aided by a distinct powerplay advantage. But at 16:19 of the 2nd Getzlaf beats Fleury to give the Yotes their first lead of the game at 3-2; however Ryan takes a penalty and Kopitar immediately capitalizes tying the game back up heading to the 3rd. Not sure what happened in the teams’ locker rooms between periods but the tightly contested games of the series went by the wayside in the 3rd period as the Bolts scored 5 times chasing Khudobin in the process and cruise to an 8-3 win in Game 5. Line 2 for the Bolts led the charge taking the game’s 3 stars……3. Carter (3a, 5 shotes), 2.Ladd (2g,2a, 6 shots), 1. Kopitar (2g,2a, 6 shots).

Back to the desert for Game 6 with the Cup in the building! Good luck Jay!
